GreenPalm: A fresh route to sustainability

Our ultimate goal is that all palm oil and palm oil derivatives should be sustainably produced. This will take time to achieve, but positive change is happening now in the palm oil industry, with help from GreenPalm.

GreenPalm LogoThe GreenPalm certificate trading programme enables companies that use or buy palm oil to support sustainable production by paying a premium direct to the producer.

This gives producers a commercial incentive to use methods approved by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) – and shows others there is demand for sustainably produced palm oil.

By January 2011, producers collectively had earned over $9m in premiums and more than 1,100,000 GreenPalm certificates had been traded. GreenPalm has earned support from some of the biggest names in manufacturing and retailing, and certificate trades continue to gain momentum.

The result? Producers, from large mills to individual smallholders, earn more for their efforts and are encouraged to continue working sustainably.

Retailers, manufacturers and consumers know they are backing sustainable production. And the palm oil industry moves ever closer to becoming sustainable.

How it works

Producers who have passed RSPO audits are invited to register a volume of their estimated production with the GreenPalm programme. GreenPalm certificates are then awarded on the basis of one certificate for each tonne of palm oil registered.

The GreenPalm certificates can then be put up for sale on the programme’s new web-based trading platform www.greenpalm.org. Users of palm oil and its derivatives can then buy those certificates online and, in doing so, commit to pay a voluntary premium to support the production of RSPO certified sustainable palm oil.
