Palm Oil is the UK’s most popular commercial frying oil, and is used in thousands of catering establishments across the nation. Now, in a time where more and more consumers are calling for ethically produced foodstuffs, pioneering Prep Palm is launching a scheme to promote production of sustainable palm oil.
The leading high performance cooking oil brand, Prep, is supporting sustainable palm oil production via the GreenPalm programme which already feeds money back to the growers, encouraging ethical and sustainable production.
Seventeen countries produce palm oil with Malaysia and Indonesia accounting for 83 per cent of global production. However, demand and hence production of palm oil has grown quickly. It is estimated that 41.5 million tonnes of crude palm oil were produced in 2008 out of a total of 134 million tonnes for all vegetable oils - an increase in palm oil of more than 7 million tonnes since 2005 and a huge burden on the local growing environments.
Millions of people are dependant on palm oil, over 1 millions workers and more than 3 million small holders. Supporting sustainable palm oil avoids land ownership conflicts, protects workers rights and conditions as well as treatment of small holders.
It has also become imperative that something has to be done to protect the environment, including safeguarding the habitat of large numbers of wildlife.
That initiative has now been established with the introduction of the GreenPalm certification programme for sustainable palm oil which is endorsed by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oils (RSPO).
By going the GreenPalm route with Prep Palm the money raised through the purchase of certificates actually goes directly to the sustainable producers and encourages other growers and suppliers to follow suit.
This differs from the purchase of sustainable palm oil which attracts a premium due to the additional cost within the supply chain as sustainable material must be segregated from non-sustainable material from refining, shipping, packaging and distribution.
“The great thing about the GreenPalm programme is caterers purchase a quality palm oil, Prep and support the production of sustainable palm oil without paying the premium, therefore creating a need for sustainable material which will encourage others to do the same and help the local people and environment” says Rachel Neale, Food Solutions Marketing Manager, AAK Foodservice.
Prep purchases GreenPalm certificates via the GreenPalm trading site for every ton of Prep Palm it manufactures and the funds raised go directly to producers of sustainable palm oil with a contribution made to the RSPO.
For palm oil producers to be able to trade GreenPalm certificates they must be audited and approved by the RSPO.
By purchasing Prep Palm carrying the GreenPalm logo, operators are now able to:
